(25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973)

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor who lived most of his life in France. He is widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore.

From the age of seven, Picasso received formal artistic training from his father in figure drawing and oil painting. Ruiz was a traditional, academic artist and instructor who believed that proper training required disciplined copying of the masters, and drawing the human body from plaster casts and live models. His son became preoccupied with art to the detriment of his classwork.

Bring your Picasso artwork in for custom framing at Twin Oaks Gallery Art and Frame where we specialize in preserving your past and framing your future.

Anna Mary Robertson Moses (September 7, 1860 – December 13, 1961), better known as “Grandma Moses“, was a renowned American Folk Artist. She is often cited as an example of an individual successfully beginning a career in the arts at an advanced age. Although her family and friends called her either “Mother Moses” or “Grandma Moses,” she first exhibited as “Mrs. Moses,” yet the press eagerly dubbed her “Grandma Moses,” which stuck.” LIFE magazine celebrated her 100th birthday by featuring her on its September 19, 1960 cover.

Grandma Moses’ paintings were used to publicize numerous American holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and Mother’s Day. Exemplary of her status, a Mother’s Day Feature in True Confessions (1947) noted how “Grandma Moses remains prouder of her preserves than of her paintings, and proudest of all of her four children, eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.”

This inspiring artist and filmmaker is considered a founder and a major figure of the pop artmovement. Andy Warhol graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology before moving to New York. His first big break came in August 1949 when Glamour Magazine asked him to illustrate an article called “Success is a Job in New York”. By 1955 Andy Warhol had almost all of New York copying his work. He was well known for creating ink images with slight color changes. Andy Warhol was into doing popular items like Coca-Cola bottles and celebrities faces, like Marilyn Monroe. His Campbell’s Soup Can is a classic and an easily recognized work of Andy’s. In the 1960s, Warhol also made a series of films which are now underground classics.

He had the privilege of working with the rock band The Velvet Underground in 1965. He traveled around the country with The Velvets and superstar Edie Sedgwick.

On June 3rd, 1968, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men), walked into Andy Warhol’s studio, The Factory, and shot him three times in the chest. He was rushed to the hospital and doctors said he was dead. Still, they decided to open up his chest and massaging his heart – just in case. It did the trick and Andy Warhol survived. After recovering, Andy continued to work. He started interVIEW magazine and published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again. And though bullets didn’t do him in, his own gall bladder did. Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987 after routine gall bladder surgery.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (July 15, 1606 – October 4, 1669) is considered to be one of the greatest painters and art printmakers in European history. He was born in Lieden, Netherlands, attended the University of Lieden and later became a Dutch painter and etcher. He had the greatest success in painting contemporaries, self portraits, and Biblical scenes; however, his most moving paintings are those of his wife, Saskia, on her deathbed.

It is speculated that she died of tuberculosis in 1642. She gave life to four of Rembrandt’s children but only one, Titus, survived to adulthood. Though Saskia was his only wife, Rembrandt did have affairs with other women after her death. One of them was Gerrtje Dircx, Titus’ nanny, she never had any of his children and their love affair ended when Rembrandt discovered she had pawned Saskia’s old jewelry away and he committed her into a bridewell. His other lover was his maid, Hendrijke Stoffles, she gave birth to their daughter, Cornelia in 1654. Though the two were considered married in common law, they never actually “walked down the aisle” because Rembrandt did not want to lose the trust left for Titus in Saskia’s will.

Mauritis Cornelius Escher (June 17, 1898 to March 27, 1972) was a Dutch graphic artist who used the principles of mathematics in his artwork. Escher was born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands and was the sickly youngest son of a civil engineer.
He was placed in a special school at the age of seven and excelled at drawing but was a poor student who failed second grade. Originally, he enrolled in the architecture program at the Harlem School of Decorative arts, but his career as a future architect was cut short by a persistent skin infection which contributed to his withdrawal from the program after a poor academic performance. In 1922, he changed his course of study to Decorative Arts. In this program he met a teacher and lifetime friend, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita.
In 1922, Escher traveled throughout Europe and was so impressed with the Italian architecture and countryside that he continued to visit the region for years. On a visit to Italy, he met his wife Jetta Umiker and moved to Rome. In 1935, the political climate in Italy became so unbearable that Escher and his family, which now included his son, Giorgio Arnaldo Escher, moved to Switzerland.
Escher disliked Switzerland and the family moved to Brussels, but the turbulent times of World War II forced the family to move to Baarn, Netherlands and live here until 1970. It was at this location that most of Escher’s most popular works were created.

Salvador Dalí (May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989), was a prominent Spanish Catalan surrealist painter born in Figueres, Spain. Salvador Dali was the son of a prestigious notary. Dali began his study of art in Madrid at the Royal Academy of Art. He was expelled twice and never took the final examinations, because he was more qualified than those who should have examined him. The body of his work, from early impressionist paintings through his transitional surrealist works, and into his classical period, reveals a constantly growing and evolving artist. Dali worked in all media, leaving behind a wealth of oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics, and sculptures, films, photographs, performance pieces, jewels and objects of all descriptions. As important, he left for posterity the permission to explore all aspects of one’s own life and to give them artistic expression.

Dutch Painter 1853-1890

“It is not the language of painters but the language of nature which one should listen to, the feeling for the things themselves, for reality, is more important than the feeling for pictures”.

Van Gogh sold only one painting in his life. Starry Night is one of the most well known images in modern culture as well as being one of the most replicated and sought after prints.

Vincent Van Gogh’s early years are difficult and filled with disappointments. He had two unsuitable and unhappy romances and had worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art salesman, and a preacher in the Borinage (a dreary mining district in Belgium), where he was dismissed for overzealousness. Vincent van Gogh remained in Belgium to study art, determined to give happiness by creating beauty. The works of his early Dutch period are somber-toned, sharply lit, genre paintings of which the most famous is “The Potato Eaters” (1885). In 1886 Vincent van Gogh went to Paris to join his brother Théo, the manager of Goupil’s gallery. In Paris, van Gogh studied with Cormon. Vincent van Gogh inevitably met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and began to lighten his very dark palette and to paint in the short brushstrokes of the Impressionists.

Van Gogh then began to alternate between fits of madness and lucidity. After his discharge from the hospital in Arles, he voluntarily admitted himself to the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy, 15 miles from Arles. Vincent van Gogh attributes his breakdown to excessive alcohol and tobacco, but gives up neither. Fearful of a relapse, in May 1889 Vincent van Gogh writes: “I wish to remain shut up as much for my own peace of mind as for other people’s.”
